SRSB Considers Support for Study Committee

posted May 6, 2011, 5:19 AM by Concerned Parents
At the SRSB's regular May meeting, Board Member Frank Machnik proposed the SRSB consider providing study committees, who will provide a public response as part of the school review process, an independent consultant or facilitator, as recommended in a 2009 public focus group report to the Department of Education.  The public focus group had representatives from school boards, communities, and the department of education, but the former Minister of Education did not adopt the recommended change to the school review process in 2010, when she increased the amount of time School Boards have to prepare Impact Assessment Reports and reduced the amount of time public Study Committees have to respond to that report.

The expectation of focus group community members was that the facilitator's support would have helped the Study Committee  complete their response, within the shortened time frame.

The CBVRSB has already appointed a consultant to help communities with schools under review in that board.

The SRSB will discuss the idea further at their May 18th working committee meeting.

The public is encouraged to write Board Members, where schools are currently under review, to request that an independent consultant / facilitator be provided to the community's study committee.  You are also encouraged to write the Minister of Education to adopt the Focus Group recommendation, which will ensure Boards are required to provide this resource for all future school reviews.
